Colors used

To get these colors, I used Wilton's Color Right Food Coloring System.*

For the cake layers: *for tips on how to get vibrant cake layers, click here.

For the icing:

The colors may differ depending on how much icing you're coloring and the starting color of your buttercream (certain butter brands are more white or yellow which can make the buttercream whiter or more yellow). These are the amounts I used and should get you close.

Pink: 35 drops

Blue: 21 drops

Decorating the cake

*I recommend watching the short video at the bottom of this page to get an idea of how this works, before reading the tutorial below - it will make more sense once you've seen it*

After the cake has been assembled, crumb coated, and cooled until icing is firm:

First -- Create your parchment templates. I've included a picture of my parchment template along with two guides I've created to help you create your own parchment templates.

  • First cut two pieces of parchment 10 inches wide by 6 inches tall (or whatever size you desire for your cake).

  • On one piece of parchment draw chevrons and diagonal lines as shown in the first guide below (click on image to expand it).

  • Mark with letters appropriately to keep track of what each piece is being used for.

  • Cut along your lines to create chevron and diagonal line shapes. I chose to group mine in three piles on my counter - chevron pieces, left diagonal lines, and right diagonal lines. This will keep things organized for when you are ready to use them.

  • Create your second template using the second guide below (click on image to expand it). Cut along the line to create two pieces.

  • These will be used to block off certain sections of the pattern when icing the other parts. Set aside.

  • Refer to the images below for more details (click on image to expand it).

  1. Place the large triangle from guide #2 onto the chilled cake. Surround the triangle with the left and right diagonal lines from guide #1.

  2. Remove the diagonal lines where you want the green and purple icing to be. Ice over the lines with the designated icing and smooth with an icing smoother or small offset spatula.

  3. Carefully remove all parchment from the cake to reveal your purple and green diagonal lines.

  4. Place cake in fridge until the icing is firm to the touch.

  5. Wipe the parchment triangle clean.

  6. Once the icing has firmed up, place the large triangle from guide #1 back onto the cake. Take the diagonal stripes marked "p" and "g" and place them on top of the purple and green diagonal lines you have just created to keep them clean. Ice over the open spaces with white icing, smooth with a small offset spatula, then carefully remove all parchment from cake.

  7. Refrigerate cake until the icing is firm to the touch.

  8. Place the bottom section from guide #2 onto the cake to cover the stripes. Place all of the chevron pieces from guide #1 onto the cake. Remove the chevron pieces for the purple and green stripes.

  9. Fill in the open spaces with the appropriate icing color, smooth the icing, then remove all parchment from the cake and place in the fridge until the icing is firm to the touch.

  10. Once the icing is firm, place the purple and green chevron strips over the stripes you have created to keep them covered. Fill in the open spaces with white icing, smooth the icing, then carefully remove the parchment from the cake and place in the fridge until the icing is firm to the touch.

  11. Place two strips of parchment over the side edges of the design to keep them clean while icing the rest of the cake. With white icing, ice and smooth the back side of the cake, then remove parchment.

  12. Place the strips marked "w"onto the cake. Dip a brush into shortening and then into the sprinkle mix to pick up some sprinkles. Touch the sprinkles to the uncovered white areas to apply them. I placed the larger ball shaped sprinkles by hand, but used the brush for all of the other sprinkles. Continue doing this until the sprinkles have been added to the cake.

  13. Slice and enjoy :)
