recipes used
1 - 1.5 batches Italian meringue buttercream
I made this buttercream vanilla flavored by adding 1 tablespoon of vanilla to my 1.5x batch (can add less or more to taste)
Colors used
To get these colors, I used Wilton's Color Right Food Coloring System and Wilton Icing Color in Black.*
For the cake layers:
Pink: 18 drops
Blue: 6 drops
Red: 2 drops
For the icing:
The colors may differ depending on how much icing you're coloring and the starting color of your buttercream (certain butter brands are more white or yellow which can make the buttercream whiter or more yellow). These are the amounts I used and should get you close.
I took 2/3 of the white icing and put it to the side. I then added some black icing color to the smaller amount of icing until it was light grey. Next, I took a small amount of that grey icing and added more black icing color until it was dark grey, leaving me with a large portion of white icing, some light grey icing, and some dark grey icing.

Decorating the cake
After the cake has been assembled and iced (to ice the cake add blobs of each color to the cake and then smooth to "marble" the colors):
Refrigerate until icing is firm to the touch.
Cut a triangle section out of the cake to resemble a geode.
Using a small offset spatula ice the exposed part of the cake where you cut out the geode shape.
Crush up the rock candy and keep the colors separate.
Add the darkest color rock candy at the center of the cut. Surround the dark candy with the light purple shade, followed by the white candy.
Slice and enjoy :)
